Verona Chard – Reviews

‘Verona Chard…her new album FEVER is a delight from opening act to epilogue! A thing of beauty – a sequence of very diverse songs. You’ll find a fantastic variety of material and Verona paying tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton with her visionary recreation of Humph’s menacing tone poem Jail Break. Verona is a fine new jazz singer’ – Digby Fairweather

‘A superior set of musical highs’ – The Musician

‘I saw a great gig with Verona Chard and her band – a new classic based vocalist at the 606 Club, great night out.’ Richard Wheatley – Jazz FM

‘Chard has a rather captivating voice and Fever gives her the perfect opportunity to swagger her undeniable vocal talents. Her voice was made for jazz. With Willow Weep for Me you can hear the emotion and vulnerability…really portrays Chard as an impeccable vocalist.’ – Entertainment Focus

‘This is and inspiringly researched, arranged and performed album – taste it and see’ – Ian Maund – Sandy Brown Jazz

‘Fever, an imaginative enterprise well realised. Chard’s thespianism surely informs the most striking moments here, such as the occasion, 3:35 into Cool, where ‘coolly cool boy’ erupts in a melismatic tornado that sounds unlike anything in the standard jazz vocal lexicon. Pianist Alex Stanford had a major role in arrangements that mix funk, reggae and swing, and Charlotte Glasson and Kevin Robinson weave convincing bebop lines throughout. Alan Barnes and Dave Green appear on a number of tracks, lending top-flight distinction to an ambitious debut.’ – Clive Cooper – Jazz Journal

“…Verona Chard is a cut above many of the current crop of chantelles and I have to admit I’m quite taken with her interpretations.” – Lance Liddle – Bebop Spoken Here.

UK Jazz Radio chooses Fever for it’s No.1

Verona Chard’ s Fever album announced as CD of the Month for November 2010!

“One of the best versions of Fever I’ve ever heard…. wonderful voice and great instrumentalists” – Brian Soundy – UK Jazz Radio – May 2010

Verona’s debut album, FEVER is a magical mix of passionate sultry jazz and inspired vocal acrobatics, showcasing her ‘beautiful voice’ (The Scotsman) and unique take on jazz, blues, funk and original material.

For research and feature purposes members of the media may download the Fever album tracks for free via http://veronachard.com/press_area.

Please contact press@veronachard.com for user name and password.

Taking as its main theme and inspiration the words of William Shakespeare, FEVER features arrangements of music by John Dankworth, Galt MacDermot, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Humphrey Lyttelton, Hirsch and Kaplan, Elton John, Ann Ronell plus Cooley and Davenport.

Verona says:
‘I’m thrilled that the album has been chosen and with the support and enthusiasm it’s been greeted with. It was two years in the making and I’ve invested everything I have into it so to get such a positive reaction is just so exciting.
I’ll also be presenting a show on UK Jazz Radio called ‘Women in Jazz’. I love researching the material and finding works by lady instrumentalists and singers both known and not so familiar with to showcase on the programme and am looking forward to getting out and interviewing those behind the scenes that champion the wonderful world of jazz.’

An exciting combination of highly trained vocalist, actor and lyricist, Verona made her stage debut at the age of five. Growing up in Bath, she excelled in all things creative. She trained at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban, but whilst enjoying a highly successful career as a singer and actor, knew that jazz was her abiding passion. She made an impressive professional jazz debut alongside Humphrey Lyttelton when she invited to guest on his Sad Sweet Songs & Crazy Rhythms album in 2005.

FEVER CD is available at www.veronachard.com.
